Rail traffic noise is often assessed in conjunction with existing vibration levels (BS 6472-1: 2008).

Sound Planning conducts both assessments using appropriate sound level meters (class 1) and accelerometers.

Sound Planning consultants often calculate day time and night time levels through the measurement of single events (trains passing by) for the various trains that operate on a given line.

The single event levels (SEL) can be utilised to determine 16 hour day and 8 hour night time levels in accordance with PPG24.

Vibration levels are quantified as Vibration Dose Values (VDV) and are compared to acceptable levels given within BS 6472 for both day and night levels.
