Road Traffic Noise can also be calculated using CRTN (Calculation of Road Traffic Noise); involving the prediction of noise levels through assesment of the road surface, gradient, widths, number of carriageways etc. combined with traffic flow and traffic mix.

CRTN also provides a methodology for an abbreviated 3 hour noise assessment. Sound Planning consultants utilise this methodology (with agreement from the local authority) if sites under consideration pose a security risk for unmanned equipment.

The 3 hour assessment can be converted to a 16 hour day using PPG24 methodology and predict night time levels (8 hours) by the TRL (Transport Resarch Laboratory) method.

Daytime and night time levels are compared to the PPG24 assessment framework (NEC's) and suitable noise mitigation strategies (facade construction) can be devised through PPG24 advice or BS 8233: 1999 calculation methodology.
